Home theatre design tool — frequently asked questions
How big should my home theatre screen be?
Screen size is driven by how far you sit and how immersive you want the picture. The tool sizes your screen to a 36–45° horizontal viewing angle (the SMPTE and THX cinema standards), so a typical 4-metre viewing distance lands around a 130–150 inch screen. Bigger rooms and a more cinematic preference mean a larger screen.
How far should I sit from the screen?
The tool calculates your main viewing distance from your room length and seating rows, then reports the viewing angle at the front and back rows so every seat stays immersive. As a guide, allow roughly 1.5 times the screen width as your primary seating distance.
What is the best speaker setup — 5.1, 7.1 or Dolby Atmos?
It depends on your room size and ceiling height. The tool recommends a configuration from 5.1 up to 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos and places every speaker to Dolby’s published angles — front speakers at 22–30°, surrounds at 90–110°, and overhead Atmos speakers spaced front to back across the room. You can also choose your own configuration and number of subwoofers.
Does the tool account for doors, windows and acoustics?
It flags doors and windows and gives tailored advice, but it is a visualisation tool, not a final acoustic design. Real rooms have materials, reflections and room modes that need an on-site assessment. That is exactly what our free consultation covers — we tune the design, recommend the right products and finalise speaker positions for your room.
Do you install home theatres in my area?
Yes — PrimeTheatres designs, supplies, installs and calibrates home theatres across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria. Use the tool to plan your room, then book a free consultation and we will take it from there.
